Working in the travel and tourism industry can be exciting, since you will be meeting different people from various places every day. Those who work in an airport also receive great benefits, such as travel incentives and discounts, and it suits the avid traveler to work with those who love travel as well. There are various occupations that you can be involved in, and here are some of the ways you can work in an airport.

  1. Step 1

    Work as a travel agent. A travel agent works for a specific airline and handles customer service, booking and check-in for travelers. A number of airlines award employees free travel tickets or vacations packages that the airline sponsors. Apply directly to the airline to score an interview. A job opening as an agent can be competitive because it is popular among those who love to travel. The hiring process may involve several screenings and can take as long as 6 weeks.

  2. Step 2

    Become a part of the airplane crew. Working as a pilot or flight attendant will give you access to airports and areas within their vicinities. Larger airlines may have a base or office in an airport, where employees of the airline work together. These bases provide support to the airplane crew and their needs.

  3. Step 3

    Apply as a security personnel through the Transportation Security Authority. TSA is part of the Department of Homeland Security, whose main priority is the security of transportation systems. They screen travelers and their belongings to ensure compliance with the laws and safety for travelers. Working as part of TSA allows you to be assist not only travelers but also law enforcement.

  4. Step 4

    Make sure that you have a good record and that you will be able to pass the background check. Airports are stringent on security and require anyone who works at the airport to pass background checks before being issued badges. You will not be able to work in an airport if you fail to pass these checks. There are several levels in an airport, and specific badges and positions of authority have access to different areas.
