Choose a product. There are numerous self-tanners on the market and you can find reviews online about each one. Go with a product whose brand name you trust. If you use a certain sunscreen or tanning oil, see what self-tanning products they have to offer. Then you will choose between a spray-on self-tanner, self-tanning lotion and even self-tanning mousse. The spray is ideal for some people due to its ease of use. It can be sprayed on, leaving your hands free of the product and preventing stains.

Prepare your skin. You will need to exfoliate by using a body scrub while taking a shower. Your skin should be soft and smooth, free of any rough spots. Pay particular attention to elbows and knees, and anywhere else the skin might be dry or coarse. You will also need to do your shaving before applying a self-tanner. Make sure your skin is dry of any water from your shower.

Apply your self-tanning product. Read any instructions. Start with your legs and apply the product. If it is a spray, use an even sweeping motion and if it’s a lotion or mousse, rub the product in evenly till it’s dry. Some self-tanning products offer a tint in them so you can see exactly where the product is being applied so you don’t miss any spots or have streaks. Pay close attention to areas such as your knees, elbows and behind your knees so that you don’t have streaking. Apply as evenly as possible.

Move up your body. Apply your self-tanner to the other areas of your body such as your stomach, arms and neck. Most self-tanners also come with products specifically for your face. If you wear makeup, this can also create an even transition from your neck to your face.

Allow your self-tanning product to dry before putting on clothes. This will prevent any staining that might occur. If you used a self-tanner that went on by hand, make sure to wash your hands so that your palms and fingers do not stain.
