Recognize and Treat Stomach Ulcers in Pets

The most common cause of stomach ulcers in pets is not stress (although it can worsen them), but a side effect of anti-inflammatory medications for arthritis or other long term problems. Pets that are generally healthy are less susceptible to stomach ulcers.

    • 1

Pet vomits even when the stomach is empty.

    • 2

There is blood in the pet's vomit.

    • 3

There is blood in the pet's stool or stool is black.

    Treat Symptoms and the Cause

    • 4

Feed the pet more often. A long time between meals allows stomach acids to build up and irritate the stomach. If you feed your pet once per day, divide the same portion into two meals morning and evening. If they already get fed twice per day, divide it into three meals.

    • 5

Soothe the stomach with aloe vera juice. Health food stores carry aloe vera juice that is designed for drinking. Putting the juice in the pet's water each day will help ulcers heal and prevent nausea. One teaspoon per day to cats and small dogs and two tablespoons (or more) per day to larger dogs

L-Glutamine speeds healing. This amino acid is recommended for healing of mucous membranes anywhere in the body, including the intestines. It is available in health food stores. Pets over 15 pounds can have 100 mg per day, while smaller pets can have 50 mg.

Reduce stress by creating a loving environment with mental and physical stimulation.
