For writers that want to make a living in the pornography industry, there are several ways to approach the task. However, all writing jobs within the world of porn will require a few basic skills in order to be successful. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind if you want to be successful as a writer in the porn industry.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Determine what type of writing you would like to do within the industry. Writers may wish to focus on scripts for movies or short stories for print publications. There is also a niche for interviewing celebrities within the world of porn. You may prefer to write reviews of products associated with the industry. Knowing your preferred direction will aid in developing your plan of action.
Step2
Get some experience. Many writers in many genres take on low paying writing jobs in order to build up a resume of samples of their work. The published samples are known as clips. Find a few local publications that focus on erotica and submit some work. Published clips in paying publications help to establish a track record and some credibility.
Step3
Hone your imagination. While everyone has some type of erotic thoughts and tendencies, there is a good chance you will need to broaden your imagination to come up with plots and characters that will prove to be interesting to prospective clients. Stimulate your imagination by doing some research into areas of erotica that are of interest to you, then see how you can add different elements to come up with something all your own.
Step4
Get an agent. Regardless of the focus, an agent that has connections within the porn industry will be able to open doors that you could never manage on your own. The clips you earned from those earlier low paying assignments will provide your agent with a powerful tool to interest others in your work.
Step5
Set up your working environment. You will need a computer with an Internet connection and a standard word processing program. There is a good chance that you will be submitting assignments electronically rather than as hard copies. Buy a printer and keep it handy, just in case you do need to print out a copy of a story or script.
Step6
Be patient. Like all writing work, it takes time to earn clients and establish a reputation. Continue working on honing your skills and get your assignments done on time and to the specifications of the client. As time goes on, more work will come your way.

Tips & Warnings

  • As with any writing assignment, it is a good idea to learn all you can about a prospective client. The more you know about what the client does and does not like, the easier it is to comply with the unspoken wishes of the customer.
  • From time to time, you may be pressured to write material that goes against your personal value system. Keep in mind that if you cave in, your work will probably not be up to your usual level of quality. This could damage your reputation in the long run. Limit your work to subject matter that you are comfortable with.
