Making a round pillow with lace trim around the edges can be a surprisingly challenging sewing project, since it can be difficult to keep everything smooth and circular. However, the results can be worth the effort. You can use round pillows with lace trim for throw pillows, or for ring bearer, doll or tooth fairy pillows.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Draw a circle that’s slightly larger than you want the pillow, or trace something round, such as a paper plate. Cut around the circle to make a pattern.

  2. Step 2

Make a second circle pattern the same size. Cut this circle pattern in half.

  3. Step 3

Cut 2 1-inch strips of paper as wide as the middle of the circle. Tape the strips to the cut edges of the pattern.

  4. Step 4

Pin the whole circle pattern and the two half circle patterns to the fabric. Cut around the patterns.

  5. Step 5

Place the lace trim and the whole fabric circle right sides together, with the straight edge of the trim along the edge of the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the lace trim around the edges of the circle, pinning it in place as you go. Cut the lace trim so that it’s just long enough for the ends to overlap slightly. Pin the ends of the lace trim together.

  7. Step 7

Sew the lace trim to the fabric using scant 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sew the ends of the lace trim together.

  8. Step 8

Fold the straight edge of each half circle over 1/4 inch toward the wrong side, then fold it over another 1/4 inch. Stitch each fold in place using matching thread.

  9. Step 9

Overlap the straight edges of the half circles to make them the same size as the whole circle. Place the whole circle and the half circles right sides together, lining them up along the edges. Pin the circles together, making sure to keep the lace trim as flat as possible between the layers of fabric.

  10. Step 10

Sew the circles together using scant 1/4 inch seam allowance. Be careful not to pucker the lace trim.

  11. Step 11

Clip small slits in the seam allowance of the circle, about 1 inch apart, without cutting through the seam. This will help it turn more easily and make the edges of the circle smoother.

  12. Step 12

Turn the pillow right side out and fluff out the lace trim. Fill the pillow with fiberfill stuffing. Whipstitch the edges of the opening in the back of the pillow to make sure the stuffing stays inside.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use a round pillow form or piece of foam to fill the pillow if you prefer.
  • Use caution when working with scissors, pins, sewing machines and sewing needles.
