Microsoft PowerPoint enables users to quickly create professional slide shows and presentations. Using Presenter View in PowerPoint will allow you to run presentations from one monitor and let your audience view them on one or more additional monitors. Presenter View works on operating systems that support multiple displays such as Microsoft Windows 98, Windows XP and Vista. Here are a few tips to help you set up and view PowerPoint on multiple monitors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Desktop or laptop computer
  • Multi-monitor video card
  • Additional monitor
  • PowerPoint
  • PC owner's manuals
Step1
Connect an additional monitor to your desktop or laptop computer. Your desktop computer will need a multi-monitor video card or a video splitter to connect an additional monitor. Most laptops have an additional monitor port built in. Refer to your owner's manual to determine your computer's configuration.
Step2
Enable multiple monitor support in Windows. Right-click your desktop then select "Properties." In the Display Properties dialog box click the "Settings" tab. Click the additional monitor from the list then select "Extend my Windows Desktop." Click "OK."
Step3
Open your presentation. Open PowerPoint and select "Open an Existing Presentation" in the window that appears. Click on the presentation you want to run then click "OK."
Step4
Start Presenter View. Click "Set Up Show" on the "Slide Show" menu. Under "Multiple Monitors" select "Show Presenter View." In the "Display Slide Show" list select the monitor you want your presentation to appear on.
Step5
Select "Presenter View" options. For example, click the "Black Out" button to temporarily darken the audience screen. Click it again to show the current slide. Click the "Up Next" button to indicate which item will appear next.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with the Presenter View options to find what works best for your presentation. Practice your presentation several times to work out any glitches.
  • Make sure your monitor cables are long enough for the presentation. Allow enough time to set up your equipment early so you can do a test run.
