How to Troubleshoot DIRECTV Installation

Troubleshooting a DirecTV installation is easy because you can do everything on screen with the remote. When there are problems with the installation, you can simply use the on-screen menu to find the section that will help you troubleshoot and correct any problems. In most cases, the problem is simple enough to correct. There are different problems that can arise when you install DirecTV, but they are easy to fix.

      Press "Action" on the DirecTV remote, and then press "Guide." This takes you to a screen that has a section called "Setup Menu."

      Select "Setup Menu" by scrolling with the up or down button. This will take you to the next screen that has a section for "Turbo Tune" or "Installation." Scroll down to "Installation."

      Select "Dish Type," and another little screen pops up. Select the type of dish you have. This will be single, dual or triple. Scroll to the right dish type and press "Done."

      Select the "Position" button, and this gives another pop-up box where you can enter your zip code or longitude/latitude. The easiest way to do this step is to enter the zip code. Select "Zip Code," and another box opens up to enter your zip code. Then click "OK." This will give you all the coordinates for the dish. Make sure your coordinates match what the screen says. Then click "OK" to be taken back to the "Signal Strength" screen.

      Select "System Test" to see how your signal and tuning is responding. This screen also tells you if a phone line is connected and if the front panel of the cable box is okay. It also tells you if your card is good and the ID number of the card.

      Click "Begin Test," and it will do a check of the system and card. After this test is done, click "Cable," and it will test your cable and satellite signal. After performing these steps and diagnosis, you should have a signal and a picture.

  • Make sure that the coax cable is connected to the dish and the receiver.

  • You may have to reposition the dish to match the coordinates.
