Hula-hooping is fun way to get fit. Hooping is a great solitary activity, but it is can be amusing and entertaining when done in groups. Hula-hooping groups are not as widely available as other fitness groups. If your community does not have a hooping group, you can create one yourself. You can Hula-hoop for a profit, or you can hoop just for fun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide which kind of hoop group you want. Do you want to start a hoop group just for fun, or do you want to start a small business? A hoop group is a perfect self-start-up business for those thinking about a career change.
Step2
Get certified. Sign up for a fitness curriculum to gain certification as a fitness trainer or fitness group leader. Get certification from a nationally recognized agency like the American Council on Exercise (ACE) to verify your competence and set you apart as a professional. For additional continuing educational credits, you can also get training as a Hula-hoop instructor. This will increase the chances of retaining hoop members. You can skip the formal training if you want to start a hula group just for fun. A desire for fitness and fun is all you need.
Step3
Buy Hula-hoop equipment. You can buy Hula-hoops in bulk and buy a hoop cart to keep them neatly organized. Having the equipment available for your group will increase the chances of gaining new members so they will not need to purchase extra equipment to join.
Step4
Make contacts in your community. Contact your local YMCA or fitness center and inquire about teaching a Hula-hoop class. Seek out private and public schools that encourage positive, after-school activities for their students. Recruit local scouting groups and senior citizen daycare programs. Check with hospitals and rehabilitation centers that offer occupational and recreational therapies to patients.
Step5
Plan and organize your Hula-hoop fitness group. Create several classes that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels that you are teaching. Plan the hours and workweek. Consider financial responsibilities, such as renting the facility space for your group and insurance costs. Consider taxes and other liabilities.
Step6
Hold local competitions. Use contests and competitions to advertise your fitness group. Offer incentives and prizes to those who participate in competitions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remain positive and upbeat. Have fun with your group and incorporate fitness and fun into every session. Modify your financial and workweek schedule, as you need.
  • Don't get discouraged if you do not have many members in your hoop group. It takes time to build a business or group.
  • Always consult your doctor before participating in any fitness or exercise program.
  • Follow all state and local laws regarding a small business. Retain any license or permits needed before starting a hoop group.
