The clothes you wear can create various impressions on the people around you. Many women feel the need to look slimmer than they actually are, and the clothes they wear can help them achieve it. Here are some suggestions on how to make look slimmer in clothes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with an empire waist in the dresses or tops. It creates a great visual to the smallest part of your waist and will skim the rest of your body. It can hide areas that you want hidden, like your tummy or hips. For the empire waist, it is better to get a wider band, as it makes a greater visual impact.

  2. Step 2

Stick with dark colors. People say that black clothes are slimming, and it's true. It is really important to stick with dark colors on pants and skirts, as it can make you look taller and thinner.

  3. Step 3

Avoid dresses if you are a little heavier on top. Suits are always more forgiving for this body type. Dresses can be worn, but it can be difficult to find the right cut for your body type.

  4. Step 4

Tailor any shirts that you have. When your tops fit you in the right places, it can attract the eyes to the right areas (and away from the wrong ones!). It can also show off your curves and bring in your waist. You do not want to look like a rectangle in the clothes you wear.

  5. Step 5

Never buy horizontally striped clothing. These clothes will make you look wider. Vertical stripes are always better--and more professional. Typically, it is best to have stripes in only tailored clothes.

  6. Step 6

Avoid pleats at all cost. It can be difficult to find a good pleated bottom for you to wear. Because pleats appear bulky and unappealing, it is best to leave them alone.

  7. Step 7

Do not purchase any stretchy fabrics. You are trying to hide parts of your body. When you have stretchy fabrics, you can see everything you have to offer.

  8. Step 8

Solid colors are typically the best option for all body types. Small points of visual interest can be added, but try to avoid any major prints. Oftentimes, prints can do strange things to a person's body, and if you are unsure of what the result looks like on you, stick with solid colors.

  9. Step 9

Buy wide-legged trousers. Make sure that they fit you nicely around the buttocks and then go straight down. The legs should not pull in or out anywhere.

  10. Step 10

Wear the right pair of shoes. Go for a higher heel and a pointy toe. It can complete your look and really transform your outfit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get the advice from your friends and family. It is a good idea for them to come with you when you are buying clothes.
  • Always try on clothes at the store and make sure you sit, walk, stand and move around in the clothes that you are trying on. It will give you a better sense of how they fit you and how you feel in them.
  • Do not trust the mirrors in the dressing rooms. Sometimes the mirrors can be skewed to make you look better. Always get someone's opinion, or try the clothes on again when you get home.
