How to Carve a Watermelon
Along with sunshine and fragrant floral scents in the air, summer brings picnics, backyard barbeques and invitations to potlucks. We all have our standard cuisine for these affairs. Carving fruit, especially watermelon will surely bring oohs and aahs from your friends and family that the old standards don’t.

1
Slice a piece of melon from the bottom to make it flat, but don’t take off so much rind that you puncture into the red fruit area. This will allow the carved watermelon to sit on a flat surface without rocking. The melon will act as a serving dish.
-
2
Cut into both top sides of the melon to create the shape of a basket. Sitting flat on the table, slice down the middle horizontally a bit more than a third of the way in. Now, slice from the top down to meet the end of the first cut. Do the same on the opposite side creating the center basket handle.

3
Scoop the red melon out of the outer bowl. Scoop out just a small portion of the melon under the handle, as you want some red to show after additional carving. Also, take out the melon from the pieces you set aside. Cube the fruit for later use.
-
4
Cut a scallop into the edges of the watermelon and along the edge of the handle. There is a special V-shaped tool you can purchase or just use a small kitchen knife to cut wedges out creating pointed triangles in and out.

5
Gather various fruits, cutting them into cubes and slices, then mix together. Pour into the carved watermelon and it’s ready to serve.

Tips & Warnings
Use a smaller melon such as a cantaloupe for a fruit dip server. Simply cut the melon in half, scoop out the middle, cube and use the fruit for the watermelon dish. Fill the cantaloupe half with your favorite fruit dip and set it next to the carved fruit basket.
For an easy fruit dip, mix a container of non-dairy topping with yogurt (vanilla or fruit flavored). Or, combine sour cream with your favorite instant pudding and add cinnamon.
If you use apples or bananas in your fruit mixture, be sure to coat them with lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.
