How to Teach Hand Writing
If you want to teach handwriting to your student or child, or simply help him write more neatly, you need only time, patience and a few simple tools. Handwriting skills are all about knowing the correct formation of the letters and practicing.

1
Choose handwriting paper that has a solid top and bottom line and a dotted line halfway between them. This type of paper is ideal for beginners since it provides a larger space to practice the letters and a midline to guide handwriting neatness.
-
2
Demonstrate correct pencil holding position to your students. If they have trouble grasping the pencil appropriately, consider using one of the rubber pencil grips that help to position the fingers in the correct way. Most children who are ready to learn handwriting will have had a lot of practice holding pencils and crayons before you begin.

3
Begin at the far-left side of the lined handwriting paper and write the letter "A" slowly and carefully. As you make the lines, say the direction the line is going. For example, a capital letter "A" would be "Down, down, across" as you write each line. This will help your students get the idea about the correct way to make the letter.
-
4
Draw the same letter again, but this time draw only dots or dashes that make up the lines of the letter. Instruct your students to copy or trace the dotted lines to get a feel for how the letter is made. Repeat this step if necessary.
-
5
Instruct your students to make their own handwritten letters on the lines of the special paper. After they are done with several, ask them which ones they are happy with, and which have some problems. This review of the letters can help them realize parts of the shape they need to pay closer attention to.
-
6
Continue to teach handwriting by writing and copying the remaining letters in the alphabet and the numbers from 0 to 9. As your students master the letters, include short words to copy that use the letters they already know. "Cab" is a good example for the beginning parts of the alphabet.
