It's important to realize that every state has different laws regarding homeschooling. If you are intending to homeschool in Louisiana, your first step is to understand the laws that govern homeschooling for your state and then to choose the best homeschooling option for your family's needs. Important areas of legal concern include compulsory attendance, required days of instruction, required teaching subjects and testing and reporting methods. Understanding your options is key to determining which method you prefer and then ensuring that your home school continues operating in full compliance with Louisiana's legal requirements.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (SBESE) guidelines and application
  • Birth certificate for each child in homeschooling program
  1. Step 1

Review the School Board of Elementary and Secondary Education application for beginning a home education program in Louisiana. The application details important elements of your homeschooling program and its relationship to the state. Questions regarding textbooks, curriculum, scheduling, testing and graduation are addressed in the application.

  2. Step 2

Submit a copy of your child's birth certificate. This is only required during the first year of your child's homeschooling education.

  3. Step 3

Complete the application and mail it to the address listed. Your home school will not be authorized until you receive an approval notice from the school board. You must send in your application within 15 days from beginning your homeschooling program.

  4. Step 4

Provide a curriculum for your child that is comparable to the courses being taught in public school. Your curriculum choices will be reviewed during the approval process of your application.

  5. Step 5

Submit a complete outline of the subjects that will be taught as well as the books and materials to be used in the homeschooling program. This is required when completing a renewal application.

  6. Step 6

Submit copies of all standardized test scores as well as copies of the child's work. These must be included in the renewal application.

  7. Step 7

Submit copies of statements from third parties who will directly oversee the child's progress. These must be included in the renewal application.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also homeschool while operating as a private school under the Statute L.R.S. 17.236. If you feel that your family would be better served under the private school option, notify the school board. You can find out more information regarding this option by viewing the link below for the HSLDA.
  • Make sure to send in all required paperwork and documentation to the school board.
