Lightning is one of nature's natural wonders, and many people marvel at it daily. With a few easy to follow steps, it is possible to create your own mini lightning and understand how this marvel works.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Iron or steel pot or pan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Iron or steel fork
  • A large plastic bag
  • Tape
  • A flat surface

Step1
Tape your plastic bag to the top of a large flat surface.
Step2
Put on the rubber gloves you have for safety. This will keep you from getting shocked, as rubber is a natural grounding substance.
Step3
Turn off all the lights in the room, and if possible try to do the experiment at night when it is dark outside. This allows you to see the created lightning better.
Step4
Hold the pot or pan by the handle, and rub it quickly back and forth across the plastic sheet. Do this for a few minutes to make a good sample of lightning.
Step5
Hold the fork in one hand, and bring it closer to the rim of the pot or pan. When you do this it should create a small spark of lightning, that you will see jump from the pot or pan to the fork. You can repeat this as many times as you like.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the pot or pan and fork are steel or iron, aluminum will not work.
  • Remember to wear rubber gloves, to avoid the chance of a static shock.
