Private aviation has become a huge hobby for many. The thrill of flying your own plane and going to small airports to explore is an incredibly fun experience. With a private pilo'ts license, charts and a pair of headsets you can work your way anywhere you want to go. Here we will explore how to fly a plane in Georgia.

From Quick Guide: Gotta Jet
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Private pilot license
  • Headsets
  • Aeronautical charts
  1. Step 1

Find an airport that is close to your home in Georgia. It will have an FBO, or fixed base operator, who rents out planes. Here, you will have to fill out the necessary paperwork to fly one of their planes. This will cover cost, time and parameters within which you will be able to rent an airplane. There are numerous small airports within a few hours drive of Atlanta Hartfsfield International Airport.

  2. Step 2

Decide what kind of plane you want. There are two, four and even six seat configurations that will all provide different ranges and passenger carrying abilities. There are areas in Georgia where a more powerful plane will be needed as the terrain may be higher and the need to go around it or over it will eat up more fuel and require more power. There will be limitations on weight and range on most planes as well as limits on use. Some can fly in bad weather while others are only for sunny and clear days.

  3. Step 3

Fly with an instructor. Learn the ins and outs of the plane you are renting. They all have different characteristics and limitations. Learn the plane's manuals as well, if only to have a general knowledge of how the plane works. Log a few hours on the plane and get a feel for how Georgia's airspace system works. It has one of the busiest airports in the world and this makes flying in that area a bit tricky at times.

  4. Step 4

Finally, pick a destination, whether in Georgia or elsewhere. Plan your flight, fuel burn, alternate airports, passenger count and luggage weights. Check with a Flight Service Station at 1 800 WX BRIEF about weather, special flying restrictions for flying in Georgia and elsewhere that day and to put in a request for flight following, where they will track your flight and keep you clear of congested areas in Georgia and elsewhere. Use your charts (make sure they are current) and stick to your filed flight plan. Enjoy the scenery. Be safe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep an eye on the weather in Georgia. It changes quickly in the southern part frequently.
  • Plan your fuel usage with a conservative mindset. There are areas of mountains and hills in Georgia and the more fuel you have to go around them, the better.
  • Compare prices for renting. They do vary and there are options such as a wet lease, where the fuel is included, and a dry lease.
  • Check the planes condition. It is your life up there and you are trusting a machine that you will not have used regularly. Pre-flight it thoroughly.
