1. The Cyldesdale is one of the easiest of horse breeds to recognize, as it has garnered world fame from being the "Budweiser Horse," as well as being used by the Royal Guard in England. They are unmistakable. The most obvious characteristic to look for is their size. They will stand from 15.1 hands to 20 hands solid, and are some of the largest horses in the world

2. Another breed characteristic is the flashy white markings prized by many breeders. The horses will often sport four white socks and a blaze, and against the dark bay coat this can be quite stunning.

3. Heavy "feathering" on the fetlocks is another breed characteristic. Long, silky hair begins just below the knees and extends all the way down to the hoof. The thicker these "feathers" are, the better.

4. The body is hugely muscled, with well rounded hind quarters that display a bigger slope than in many Draft breeds. The hooves will be two to three times the size of an average Thoroughbred. Cannons are short and massive, and the head can be convex or "Roman" nosed.

5. The gait of the Clydesdale is lofty and proud. For such large animals, they display a lightness and ease in their trot that is amazing. The knee and hock action is high, and with their "feathers" and thick manes flying as they trot out, they make a grand and noble sight. It is no wonder they have been picked by royalty for over three hundred years to carry the guards in England.
