How to Ship a Car by Train

Using rail to ship automobiles is becoming an increasingly popular choice in the United States and Canada as trucking costs rise. Adding to the cost advantages is the fact that if you ship a car by train it is far more energy efficient than using trucks, making this the “green” option. There are now several companies that provide service varying from rail transport on limited routes to nationwide pick-up and delivery anywhere in the United States and Canada.

Prepare to ship a car by rail by selecting a company that meets your needs from the options described in Steps 2 to 5. You should arrange pick up at least 2 to 5 days in advance, although a week is better. Allow anywhere from three to 25 days for delivery (companies give you a time estimate and will keep you informed of any changes in projected delivery dates). You will need to remove any personal belongings from the car (this is required by US and Canadian safety regulations) and arrange to have the car picked up at a specified location or else deliver it to the terminal yourself.
