Upgrading Internet Explorer is one of the most important things you can do to enhance your web experience and security, if this is the web browser you choose to use. Running an older version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, or any other web browser, leaves you open to security issues that have been resolved in the newest version.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  1. Step 1

Check to see what version of Microsoft Internet Explorer you are using. It is possible you do not need an upgrade. Open your Internet Explorer software, go to the "Help" tab in the task bar in the top left corner, and select "About Internet Explorer." Here you will see which version of Microsoft Internet Explorer you are using. Write this number down.

  2. Step 2

Navigate in your browser to the link listed in Resources below. This is the official Microsoft upgrade page. Beware of imposters. Running a search may return some pages offering versions of Internet Explorer with unauthorized "spyware" plugins and toolbars preinstalled.

  3. Step 3

Check the version number you wrote down from within your Internet Explorer software against the latest release version listed on this page. If the version listed is higher, you can download the latest version of Internet Explorer at this website.

  4. Step 4

Find a tab in the lower portion of the page that allows you to select your operating system from the drop-down list. Select the appropriate operating system and proceed to the next page. Here you will find the download link.

  5. Step 5

Download the file and run it, and your system will do the rest for you. Be careful with installing if you use another web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, in addition to Internet Explorer. The program will attempt to set Internet Explorer as the default application for any number of file types. Uncheck these if you would like to keep your current settings.

  6. Step 6

Close any programs that are open before proceeding and complete the install process. Restart your computer, and you are all set to go with the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer and all the benefits it has to offer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beware of third-party websites offering downloads to upgrade Internet Explorer. These may come preloaded with spyware or toolbars, or contain viruses. Always check your address bar to make sure the URL says "microsoft.com" before downloading.
