How to Select Outdoor Toys

Children don’t need much to enjoy their time frolicking in the wide-open spaces—but implementing play equipment can greatly enhance their play experiences and encourage them to be physically active. Learn to select outdoor toys that are safe and fun for your kids by following these easy steps.

1. Make safety a top priority. What type of safety record does the toy company have? Were any of the materials used to manufacture the toys toxic? Is the equipment appropriate for the age of your child? These are all questions you should consider before making a final selection on equipment.

2. Be realistic about your living situation and the amount of outdoor space that’s available for toys. For instance, if you live in an apartment or have a small backyard, selecting customized play structures that require a lot of outdoor space is not a good idea. Portable play structures are better suited for those who don’t have a lot of space, or have living arrangements that aren’t permanent.

3. Let your kids’ interests serve as your guide. Not all youngsters enjoy climbing and swinging. Some children may prefer playing in a playhouse or digging in a sandbox. Make sure to take your children’s interests into consideration when you’re choosing outdoor toys for them to play with.

4. Use caution when you’re purchasing second-hand toys. Outdoor toys that have been previously owned often have a lot of wear and tear, and aren’t always in good condition. So before bringing used toys home to your children, inspect them carefully for sharp edges and parts that are missing, loose or rusting.

5. Don’t forget the small stuff. When you think of outdoor toys, you generally think of climbing structures, sliding boards and swing sets. But there are a number of other fun things that your kids can play with too, such as hula hoops, balls, buckets, sand boxes and riding toys.
