How to Upgrade Dell Laptop Memory

Determine how much memory your Dell laptop has. Right click on "My Computer" and select properties. Under the general tab, you will find memory information listed along with some other computer specifications. It will likely read something like this: 1.00 GB of RAM (Random Access Memory). It may say less or more than this depending on your system.

Select and buy the amount of memory you wish to install. If unsure, check the additional resources below to determine what type and how much memory your system can use.

Purchase the memory online or at your local electronics store and install it. Check your manual for the location of the Memory Access door, which is typically located at the bottom of your laptop. Some of these doors are held in place by a single screw or clip. In either case, remove the power cord and battery before beginning.

Remove your old RAM card by gently pulling the clips away from it and sliding it out at approximately a 45 degree angle.

Insert your RAM upgrade by aligning the connector slot tab with the notch in the RAM card and sliding it firmly in. Secure the clips in place and replace the access door.

Replace the battery and power on your laptop. It should automatically recognize and install the new RAM.
