Getting locked out of your house can be extremely frustrating. Before you break a window or kick down your door, there are ways to get back into your house by using everyday products that you can carry in your purse or keep outside and can access. Keep in mind that you should only pick the locks of property that you own.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Know how the lock works so you can understand what you must do to pick the lock. The lock is made up of cylinders and pins. These pins need to be lifted to move the cylinders and turn the handle.
Step2
Apply force on the pins, which is necessary in order to move the pins upward so that the cylinder can move. Use whatever tool you have found and apply force to the first pin.
Step3
Push the pin. In order to get the pin to stay up once you have used your force to push it up, you have to make sure it sets in place. Push on the pin until you feel it is set and will not fall back down to where it originally was.
Step4
Repeat your efforts until you get it to work. Using Steps 2 and 3, make sure that all of the pins in the cylinder are set in place. The amount of pins varies based on the lock. For every lock, there are at least two pins, but never more than five pins.
Step5
Check the handle on the lock. Turn the knob of the lock that you are trying to pick. If the knob doesn’t turn, you haven’t pushed each pin upward. Continue to push the pins into place and then try to rotate the knob until the cylinders give way and you can open the door.
