Adding a yarn wig tops off a great costume. Making your own yarn wig is very economical. Purchase some inexpensive supplies, follow a few simple steps, adjust your colors and lengths and be on your way to creating your own wig out of yarn.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large Styrofoam ball
  • Plastic cap
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle
  1. Step 1

Buy a large Styrofoam ball to use as a head model. Or if you own a plastic head, you can use that instead.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a plastic cap used by hair stylists to streak hair. These are sold at any beauty supply store. There should already be holes in the cap. If there are not, or there are not enough holes, use any sharp device to poke more holes in the cap. Place the cap on the head model.

  3. Step 3

Buy a skein of colored yarn. This is your yarn wig creation, so choose the color or colors you wish your wig to be. Also purchase a darning needle.

  4. Step 4

Decide on the length of the yarn wig you're making. Cut strands of yarn double your desired length. The thickness of your wig will determine how many strands of yarn you will need. If one skein of yarn isn't enough for the desired thickness of your wig, buy more skeins.

  5. Step 5

Thread the needle with a strand of yarn. Push the needle through one hole in the plastic cap and out another. Remove that strand of yarn from the needle. Thread a different piece of yarn and also push the needle through one hole and out another. Repeat this process until the plastic cap is completely covered with long strands of yarn hair.

  6. Step 6

Let the yarn hang loose. It is not necessary to tie it off. Using scissors, trim your yarn wig so it is neat and even. You can also remove extra yarn, or add additional yarn. This is your yarn wig design, so use your imagination.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a number of different types of caps to choose from when making your yarn wig. You can purchase a swimming cap, a shower cap, a nylon cap, or even a baseball cap.
  • Never try to make a yarn wig using a real head as a model. You might accidentally poke a real head with the darning needle.
