How to Install a New Hard Drive in a Compaq Computer
Just like all the best things in life, hard drives don’t last forever. There may come a time when you need a new hard drive in your Compaq computer. Even if your old one is fine, you might want to upgrade to a bigger drive that can hold more files, pictures and videos. Either way, save yourself some money and do it yourself. It’s easy to do if you follow these simple steps.

Shut down the computer. Remove all cables from the computer, including the power cable.

Open the computer case. Depending on your model, there will be a tab, button or latch on the back. Release it and open the case.

Locate and remove the power cable from the old hard drive. The power cable usually consists of a black and red wire with a plastic connector. Gently grasp the connector and pull it straight out.

Locate and remove the data cable from the old hard drive. The data cable looks like a wide ribbon with a plastic connector. Gently grasp the connector and pull it straight out.

Release the hard drive clamps and remove the hard drive. Depending on your model, you may need to loosen some set screws. Most of the time, you should be able to unhook it by hand.

Insert the new hard drive and clamp it into place. Reconnect the data and power cables. Close the computer casing securely, reattach all cables and power up the computer to enjoy your new hard drive.

Check with your local computer dealers to see if you can recycle your old hard drive.
Refer to the manufacturer’s documentation to make sure the new hard drive is compatible with your Compaq computer before you purchase it or attempt the installation.
