One of the best things about computer networks is their ability to make data available from any workstation connected to the network. But users can get frustrated and become less productive every time they log on to a different workstation with an unfamiliar desktop. You can make their day and increase their productivity by creating roaming user profiles. That way, your users can log on to any workstation in the network and still find their personalized combination of settings and applications no matter which machine they’re using.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows Server 2000 software
  • Active directory users and computers software module
Step1
Decide which machine you want to use to create and store the shared folder. The shared folder can be located on the domain controller or any other computer in the domain.
Step2
Open My Computer (also known as Windows Explorer) and click the drive in which you want to create a shared folder to store roaming user profiles.
Step3
On the File menu, point to New and then click Folder. Type a name for the new folder and then press Enter.
Step4
Right-click the new folder you just created and click Sharing. Click Shared As, type the name that you want to assign to the shared folder in the Share Name box and then click OK. Close Windows Explorer.
Step5
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
Step6
Double-click the user account to which you want to assign a roaming profile and then click Profile.
Step7
Type the complete path to the shared folder that contains the user's profile in the User Profile Path box. For example, let’s say the name of the server that has the shared folder is “ServerA” and the shared folder is named “Profiles.” You would type in “\\ServerA\Profiles\%username%” (without the quotation marks). Windows Server 2000 will automatically replace the variable %username% with the user’s actual account name. Click OK when you’re done.
Step8
Repeat steps 6 and 7 above for each individual user’s roaming profile. When you’re done, close Active Directory Users and Computers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most network administrators use the name “Profiles” for the shared folder that is used to store roaming user profiles.
