How to Become a SES Tutor
Title 1 of the “No Child Left Behind” Act of 2001 (NCLB) allocates funds and grant monies to help improve education in those schools in the United States that have been identified as the lowest achieving schools. NCLB directs that all school children must demonstrate high levels of achievement in English language skills and mathematics by 2014. One way to help enhance learning for students who attend Title 1, underachieving schools is to provide Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for them. This program opens new job opportunities for educational professionals who want to become an SES tutor.

Determine if there are any SES-eligible students in your area. In general, SES tutoring is made available to students without charge to the student’s family, so school districts and families must identify SES eligibility. Begin your research by checking the map at http://www.tutorsforkids.org/state.asp. It is somewhat dated, but it will give you some baseline information.

Decide when and where you will offer your tutoring services. SES assistance is not part of the regular school day, so you must be available to work with students before and after school, on weekends or during the summer. You may be able to use school facilities, or you may need to find another location for your SES program.

Each state develops its own application process, so check with your state’s Department of Education for more details. In general, you must be able to demonstrate that you have experience in helping to raise the level of student achievement in academic programs; offer research-based instruction that improves academic achievement and meets academic standards for your state; and show that you are compliant with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.

Check with for-profit and not-for-profit programs to learn if they are hiring and to learn the qualifications for a position with them. You will find a list of some of the top providers at http://www.tutorsforkids.org/Top15Providers.asp .
