How to Become a Florida Property Appraiser
Florida Property Appraisers falls under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Under the DBPR is the Florida Appraisers Board. Becoming a Florida Property Appraiser is not easy. It takes a lot of time and education but can become a very lucrative career. There are also different qualifications of property appraisers, each with it's own set of required education and testing. This can prove to be very challenging and rewarding.

Become a registered trainee. Before you become a certified residential appraiser in Florida you must become a registered trainee. You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or the equivalent. To become a registered trainee you must attend 100 hours of classroom education designed for appraisers and successfully pass an examination. Apply to the Florida Division of Business and Professional Regulation with the certificate of completion of the 100 hours of education. The DBPR also requires you to have an electronic fingerprint card and a fee for the application. You can file your application while you are still in school to save time and then send in the other required information as you obtain it. If when you submitted your application you did not have employment information, you will have to provide a form called a RE-2060-1 which states where you will be working.

Gain experience. Before you can become a certified residential appraiser, you must have 2500 hours of appraising experience over a period of 24 months. You may also have to produce copies of your appraisal reports to the Appraisal Board as proof of your experience.

Meet college level education requirements. You must have an associated degree or above from an accredited college, community college, junior college or university or you can successfully complete and pass 21 credit hours from one of these colleges, including all the following subject matter: English Composition, Principles of Economics, Finance, Algebra, Statistics, Computer Science and Business or Real Estate Law.

Complete the appraisal course requirements. The requirement is satisfactory completion of 200 hours of classroom study in courses designed for appraising, however, this includes the 100 hours you took as a trainee.

Pass the exam. You must successfully complete and pass AQB approved Certified Residential Property Examination and the Florida Laws and Rules Examination.

Submit your application, fingerprint card and fee to the Division of Business and Professional Regulation. After you have become an appraiser you need to follow up with post licensing and continuing education courses. Most of these courses can be done on-line.
