The blitz is a defensive strategy in football that is extraordinarily effective at disrupting opposing offenses. When you run a blitz, you're essentially betting on the fact that the extra defensive pressure up front will either result in a sack of the quarterback or a quick containment of the ball behind the line of scrimmage. It's high risk, high reward.

How to Run a Blitz in Football

1. The key to running a blitz properly is to adjust your pass coverage accordingly to ensure you don't give up a quick score because of broken coverage. Often the best method of adjustment is to put your defensive backs (if you aren't blitzing them) into single-man coverage and to drop back a couple of defensive linemen or linebackers to fill in any gaps created by your blitz.

2. Bring the heat accordingly. While it may be tempting to bring an all-out blitz, including defensive backs, linebackers and the whole squad, simple one-linebacker blitzes are important in balancing the aggressiveness of your defensive strategy. So only bring the big blitz from time to time, as a surprise tactic.

3. Have your players disguise their intentions. The blitz is best as a surprise attack because it leaves the offensive line no time to develop a new blocking strategy.

4. Combine the blitz with stunts. Defensive line stunts will make your linebacker blitzes far more effective. Remember to run the two together for optimal effect.

5. Signal the blitz discreetly. If your opponents see you signaling a blitz, they might audible and run a deep pass route for a quick score.

• Give your players the option to audible themselves for a blitz if you think they can handle the responsibility. Doing so will help create pressure because your players will get an on-field sense for what situations merit running a blitz.

• Do not overuse the blitz. Those who live by the blitz, die by it. Focus on maintaining a solid defensive strategy and bring the blitz sparingly.
