How to Make Own Icons

Icons are created on your computer desktop to allow easy access to specific programs. The icons act as gateways to the program, so once they are open the actual program opens; however, when you delete the icon the program remains while only the icon is removed. You can create icons for anything in your computer, from files and programs to simple pictures and word documents.

  • Open "My Computer."

  • Select the "C:" drive. You can create programs from any drive or device, but most program files are stored in the "C:" drive.

  • Navigate to the folder, program, file or image for which you want to create an icon.

  • Right-click the file. This will bring up a pull-down menu. From the menu, select "Create Desktop Icon." Once you click this, the desktop icon will be made.

  • Close out "My Computer." You will be able to see the new icon. If you want to change the name of the icon you can right-click the icon and select "Rename." Now type in what you would like the icon to be called and hit "Enter." This will save the changes to the new icon.
