How to Consolidate Instant Messaging Programs
It can be frustrating to keep in touch with friends over instant messaging when so many people use different programs for IM. Downloading and installing multiple IM programs can use up memory and slow down your computer, not to mention the hassle of navigating multiple windows for each program. By using a consolidation program, you can combine all of your IM programs into one, thereby reducing the strain on your computer and making life easier.

1
Write down all of your log-in information. You will need the log-in names and passwords for all of your accounts once you've downloaded a multi-protocol instant messaging client. Have this on hand so you can set up all of your account at once.

2
Visit the Downloads website (see Resources below). Downloads has all of the download files that you need for your new instant messaging program. From the homepage, select the tab on the side of the page that says, "Chat, VoIP, Email." This will take you to the available programs for IM. You can also find the most recent versions of the popular single protocol programs like MSN, AIM and Yahoo.

Check the ratings. Make sure you get the best software by checking out the user and CNET editor reviews and ratings of the different programs. You can tell how popular a program is by the number of downloads listed on the right side of the screen.

Select a program. There are many programs to choose from. Trillian is one of the most popular multi-protocol clients available and offers instant messaging for MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and IRC. There are other programs too, such as Digsby and Integrity Messenger. Read through the available information on each product to find the one that interests you.

Download the software right from Downloads. All their downloads are tested for spyware and viruses so you know you are getting clean software. Once the program is downloaded, double click the icon and follow the on-screen instructions for installation. You will be prompted to enter your log-in information for the IM accounts you wish to access.
