Becoming a bounty hunter in South Carolina can be a long process. Before you start to become a bounty hunter or 'runner' (as it is referred to in South Carolina) you must know that freelance bounty hunting is outlawed in S. Carolina, N. Carolina and Florida; therefore, you must go to work for a licensed bail bondsman.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get educated. First, in order to become a runner bondsman (bounty hunter) in South Carolina you must get the appropriate education. The education required for becoming a runner bondsman is a 20 hour education that can be obtained by attending any one of the institutions in the state that offer continuing education opportunities. You won't be able to obtain a runner's license until you have gotten this education.

  2. Step 2

Apply to the department of insurance. After you have completed your education, you will need to apply for a runner's license to the South Carolina Department of Insurance. You should take your proof of education, social security card, birth certificate, photo ID, a passport sized photo (for your runner's license) and 200 dollars for the cost license. Remember, just because you have the education, it is unlawful to run bonds without a license you could get into major trouble over that.

  3. Step 3

Know your authority. Finally, knowing your authority when running bonds is very important. For the very longest in South Carolina, it has been illegal to run bonds either without a license or to do freelance running. If you become a runner, you are to work under a licensed bail bondsman, NEVER on your own; doing so could result in fines, loss of your runners license (no refund of licensure fees) and possible jail time.
