Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use prior experience to your advantage. If you've ever worked for a bank or any other financial institution, definitely be sure to list it on your resume as "related experience" and mention it while querying publications for writing assignments. As you gain writing experience play it up, using financial experience as a base of knowledge.

  2. Step 2

Gain necessary business writing experience. Start a blog about issues in the business community or offer your services to business Web sites and also small financial publications. Also apply for positions on Web sites such as JournalismJobs.com and Ed2010.com.

  3. Step 3

Contact business magazines via email for informational meetings with human resources or hiring managers. These should put you in front of the editors and have them share their take on your experience and any open positions. If interning is an option, apply for those positions.

  4. Step 4

Compile all of your writing samples, prefer in an "artist presentation book" for informational meetings and formal interviews. Be sure these writing samples highlight your knowledge

  5. Step 5

Begin freelancing for larger publications while looking for a position as a staff writer, assistant, or associate editor at a magazine or newsletter. Usually it's best to write for finance sections of general interest publications until you work your way up to niche finance or business magazines.

  6. Step 6

Begin specifically applying for positions through posts and also through human resources contacts made through informational meetings.
