How to Swim With Dolphins in San Diego

San Diego is a vacationing family’s paradise. The San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park andSea World are some of the most popular destination spots for families vacationing in San Diego. The more adventurous families may want to take advantage of the unique opportunity to swim with the dolphins during their San Diego trip. Families are in luck as they can combine their trip to Sea World with a fantastic dolphin experience.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Launch your internet browser and go to the Sea World San Diego website. Click on Experiences and then click on Behind the Scenes.

  2. Step 2

    Hold your mouse over the pictures on the Behind the Scenes page until you see the Dolphin Interaction Program. Click on the “Click to Learn More” link.

  3. Step 3

    Read the program’s description. Your dolphin interaction experience will start with an educational lesson on the dolphins then you will get into the dolphin pool. In the dolphin pool you’ll be able to touch the dolphins, signal them to do certain tricks and feed them. The dolphin interaction is only for people six and over and the cost is $160.00 per person.

  4. Step 4

    Call 1-800-25-SHAMU to make reservations for your San Diego Sea World Dolphin Experience.

  5. Step 5

    Alternately, from the Experiences home page, you can click on the Trainer for a Day option. The Trainer for a Day is a much more in-depth experience.

  6. Step 6

    Read the Trainer for the Day requirements and information screen. You must be 13 or older and the cost is $545 which includes admission to Sea World, a commemorative T-Shirt, a Dolphin Training and Interaction Book as well as Lunch. You must be in good physical condition and comfortable in the water to participate in the Trainer for the Day program.

  7. Step 7

    Call 1-800-25-SHAMU ext. 71 to make your Trainer for the Day reservation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not put sunscreen on until you speak with the staff as some sunscreens may be harmful to the dolphins.
  • If you are planning to participate in the Trainer for the Day program, consider bringing a friend along to watch. Your friend will be treated like a VIP and will be able to share memories of your special day.
