The Harajuku style of dress began among teenage girls in Japan. These girls dress in outrageous and wacky outfits and hang out in the Harajuku Shopping District in Tokyo. They usually dress in certain themes such as gothic, punk, school girl and others. The style is constantly changing and evolving, but there are certain guidelines that all Harajuku girls generally follow.

1. Familiarize yourself with the different types of styles that are common among the Harajuku set. There are different themes you can incorporate into your look. Some girls like to dress in the gothic style where they wear lots of black dresses and gowns and accessorize with studded jewelry or skulls. Some like to dress in the school girl style, which means wearing feminine and young-looking outfits with provocative mini skirts. Some even dress up like their favorite cartoon characters. The possibilities are endless.

2. Mix and match different clothing styles. Anything goes with Harajuku style. Feel free to mix styles from different eras, and wear things that you wouldn't usually wear together like a ballerina tutu with bright colored stockings and boots. Be as wild and unique as possible.

3. Wear lots of layers. Harajuku style usually involves heavy layering like wearing a sleeveless blouse over a long sleeved shirt. You can also layer tanks, sweaters, vests, leggings with skirts and more. Let your imagination run wild and pair items that you would never think to do otherwise.

4. Try on bold accessories. A Harajuku look would not be complete with some eclectic accessories to pull the whole style together. Some accessories you can try are chunky bangles, long necklaces, colorful scarves, embellished belts, colorful handbags, hair clips and more. Harajuku girls love to mix lots of accessories together from head to toe.

5. Be fearless with your hair and makeup. When your outfit is so outrageous, your hair and makeup should match. Harajuku girls love to dye their hair crazy colors like bright red or blue. They also love to play around with different hair styles like bangs, braids, lavish curls and chic bobs. Makeup should also be bold and colorful. Play up your eyes with false eyelashes and bright eyeshadows, and color your pout with red or pink lipsticks.
