Don't work for peanuts!

If you are trying to negotiate a raise or you are vying for a new position, you will need to have a salary in mind. You can't simply pick a number out of the air, or throw out a number you would like to earn. And you really shouldn't leave it all up to your employer. You need to determine a salary that is fair to both of you.

Instructions

    • 1

Refer to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. This publication is provided by the US Department of Labor and lists wage estimates--among other information--for over 700 occupations.

    • 2

Check out job listings. Look for positions that are similar to your current or desired job, and find out what pay is offered. If the employment listing does not specify the salary, call and ask. They may not divulge the information, but it can't hurt to try.

    • 3

Network. Get in touch with colleagues or acquaintances who work in related fields and see what information they can give you. Remember, they don't have to have that specific job to know what it might pay. An office manager or HR manager might be better prepared to help.

    • 4

Contact headhunters and recruiters. Not only will they be able to provide you with this information, but they might know of an even better position for you.
