How to Use Table Salt to Clean Oven Stains

Baked-on oven stains are certainly some of the toughest kitchen messes to tackle. Whether you're putting up with a hot kitchen and an energy-draining five hour self cleaning cycle or you're chiseling away at crusty spills from your hands and knees, it's a painful experience. But the next time you have a tough oven spill, try this trick. You might find it to be the most effective oven cleaning tactic of them all.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • Table salt
  • Rubber or wood scraping tool

Step1
Before you attempt to clean up the stain, make sure you have the right kind of scraping tool. You'll want to avoid scratching the enamel on the inside of the oven, so you should pick out a scraper that is made out of firm rubber or wood. Hard plastic or metal scrapers can easily tear up your oven's finish.
Step2
Allow the oven to cool completely. Dampen a paper towel and blot the stain until it's fairly wet.
Step3
Sprinkle on a generous layer of table salt. Wait about ten minutes. The salt will actually dissolve most of the gunk during this time.
Step4
Dampen another paper towel with warm water and blot the stain again. If the stain feels very loose and crusty when you do this, you may be able to just wipe it away with the paper towel.
Step5
Carefully scrape at whatever crust remains using your scraping tool. If you're trying to clean a particularly thick layer of crust, you may need to repeat the salt procedure and wear away at the stain in layers.
Step6
Wipe up any crumbs left behind with a damp paper towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to let the oven cool all the way to room temperature before using this cleaning tactic.
