The main job of a cooling fan is to increase the air mass that flows through a radiator core and prevent a car engine from overheating. It is important to install the cooling fan correctly to prevent excess engine heat from destroying the radiator, seals, gaskets and hoses. Manufacturers use two general cooling fan systems: engine-powered fans and electric cooling fans. Here we will follow a general procedure to help you properly install a cooling fan in your vehicle. Some engine-powered fans come with a water pump fan spacer or pulley. Take this into account when assembling your cooling fan. So let’s start.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

How to Install an Engine-Powered Fan

Step1
Connect the fan and clutch assembly by tightening the nut with a wrench or ratchet.
Step2
Install or position the fan-clutch assembly into the radiator shroud.
Step3
Lower the shroud and fan-clutch assembly into the engine compartment. Make sure it faces the radiator.
Step4
Replace the main nut to tighten the fan-clutch assembly to the water pump. You might need special tools to fasten the nut.
Step5
Screw the shroud to the radiator.
Step6
Reconnect the radiator-to-reservoir hose if necessary.
Step7
Reconnect the cables to the battery.

How to Install an Electric Cooling Fan

Step1
Position the fan motor in the shroud and tighten the nuts.
Step2
Slide the motor shaft into the hole at the center of the fan.
Step3
Tighten the nut that secures the fan to the motor. In most cases, this nut comes with left-hand threads. Turn counterclockwise to tighten.
Step4
Slide the fan, motor and shroud assembly into the engine compartment. Make sure it faces the radiator.
Step5
Screw the shroud to the radiator.
Step6
Plug the wires to the motor and make sure the connector snaps into a locked position.
Step7
Reconnect the cables to the battery.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can buy a service manual for your vehicle at most auto parts stores or consult one for free at the reference section of a public library.
  • In some cases, you will need special tools for cooling fan installation, especially for a engine-powered model. Consult the service manual for your particular vehicle for more information.
  • It is necessary to follow the torque specifications recommended by the manufacturer when securing the fan to its clutch in engine-powered fan systems. Consult the service manual for your particular vehicle for more information.
