How to Get Rid of Fleas on Ferrets

Most domestic animals unfortunately fall victim to those tiny, itchy, black things known as fleas. Ferrets are no exception to this situation. Although fleas can be somewhat difficult to get rid of it is possible to get relief to your beloved ferret and your home. In order to tackle fleas which are known to be not only crafty but resilient little creators you will need a few supplies-- a flea medicine, flea shampoo, flea collar, flea powder and a vacuum. Read on to learn how to get rid of fleas on ferrets.

Things You'll Need:

  • Flea medicine
  • Flea shampoo
  • Vacuum
  • Flea powder
  • Flea collar
  1. Step 1

    Now that you have your flea killing arsenal in hand the first thing you need to do is give your ferret a bath. You will need to use a flea killing shampoo. Be sure the scrub your ferret’s hair thoroughly with the shampoo. Remember fleas are tiny and can borough into your ferret’s hair. Once your ferret is good and dry you then want to put some flea medicine on it’s neck. You can pick up flea medicine from your vets office. Just a note, don’t buy your flea medicine from a grocery store. The flea medicine from grocery stores are not as powerful as those you get from the vets office. If you are not prepared to put out the money to properly care for your animal then you need to find it a better home. Besides imagine having fleas all over you. Don’t you think you would want to best stuff to kill them.

  2. Step 2

    Understand that getting rid of fleas isn’t just about getting them off your ferret but riding them of your house. Fleas live you carpet, couch and bedding. You need to take the flea powder and sprinkle it on your carpet and sitting areas. Wait a few minutes then vacuum it up. This the powder will kill the fleas along with the vacuum. You want to wash your bedding. Any fleas on that will eliminated in the spin cycle. By doing these things to your house will ultimately keep the fleas off of your ferret.

  3. Step 3

    The last thing you can do to rid your ferret of fleas is to put a flea collar on your ferret. Flea collar are designed to give continous flea killing medicine to your ferret, so if anymore fleas try to make in a home in your ferrets hair they will be killed and your ferret will be happy and thankful.

on 10/24/2008 Flea collars not only work on the ferret (though you need to be careful with the interaction with their skin - I use kitten strength collars) but also in your vacuum cleaner. If you vacuum and then stop the fleas can still jump out of the bag. If you have a bagless vacuum take a fresh flea collar and tape it to the inside of the cylinder. Fast and easy way to kill them!
