1. Learn how to shoot photography. The most important thing you can do before becoming a freelance photographer is to be well educated in taking pictures. Take several courses in photography and really learn how to use all of the features of a high end digital camera.

2. Buy your own camera. Obviously you need your own equipment to be a freelance photographer. You will not only need a good camera, but a tripod, lighting, diffusers and different lenses. Becoming a professional photographer is not cheap.

3. Build a portfolio. Before someone hires you, they will want to see your work. Put together a professional portfolio that shows the different styles of photography that you can shoot. You should have examples of all types of photos including black and white and color. Include some action shots, portraits and some artistic prints as well.

4. Print some business cards. As you meet people who might be interested in your services, you will need to provide them with a business card so that they can contact you. Have business cards printed up at a local printer with your complete contact information and ideally, a website address to a website where they can view your portfolio online.

5. Market yourself. Take out ads in local papers and online. Be sure to tell all of your friends and family about your new business venture so that they can give you referrals. Network with other professionals in other areas like marketing people, graphic designers and other creative freelancers who might have need for a photographer.
