A duvet is a soft quilt that adorns one's bed. It is often given as a wedding present, and it is used in all bedrooms of the home in many houses. It was always traditionally filled with eiderdown, but there are more kind choices available today. That duck is now on the endangered list, but duvets are still made. Now a duvet is considered bedding made of two layers of cloth filled with stuffing. These layers are then stitched together.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric Chalk
  • Fabric
  • Fabric Filling
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle
  • Yardstick
  • Iron
  • Pattern Tissue
  1. Step 1

Use a long staple cotton with a smooth surface. It should be light weight and high in thread count. Wash and iron the material before beginning.

  2. Step 2

Measure the length and width of the bed you intend to cover, adding on both sides for the drop you desire plus 5/8” for the seam. Make a template out of pattern tissue and pin it to your selected material. Put right sides together. Cut out the top and bottom side of the quilt.

  3. Step 3

Mark your fabric with chalk in a square pattern, matching each side. Make the squares about one foot each. Sew the outer edges; right sides together, leaving an opening on the side of the quilt. Trim the seams with scalloped scissors or a serger, clipping the corners so they lie nicely. Press the seams open and turn the quilt right sides out.

  4. Step 4

Stuff the filling into the quilt. Fill it just below the first line. Let it settle on the bottom until the thickness you desire is evenly distributed across the quilt. Follow the line above where you have it stuffed. Start sewing the length of it.

  5. Step 5

Continue stuffing and sewing your quilt horizontally until you reach your opening. Check each pass to insure the filling is the same thickness across each time.

  6. Step 6

Fill the last section and blind stitch the opening shut. Reinforce it with the sewing machine if your hand sewing is not sufficient.

  7. Step 7

When sewing vertically to complete your quilt, it is imperative you keep the thickness and even sizing consistent. Cover your duvet with a fancy duvet cover and you have a new, hand made bed set.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prepare each section carefully prior to sewing.
  • Don't rush through this process. Pay close attention to detail before making the final seams.
