How to Make a Bra
-
1
Find a Bra PatternChoose a pattern you like, with a style you like: one strap, two straps or no straps, wide band or thin, lace cups or plain cups, inserts or no inserts? Compare bra patterns, prices and choose the one that you most like. The pattern will include the type of fabric you need and after you take your measurements, it will help you determine the amount of fabric you need as well as everything else you will need.

2
Take MeasurementsThe best way to get the most accurate measurements is to have someone else measure for you. So, if you can find someone you trust to take your measurements, that will be the easiest while wearing your best-fitting bra. If you're too embarrassed or can't find anyone, do it yourself. You will need to take several measurements, starting with measuring the fullest part of your bust – not pulled snug, and your underbust, right along your rib cage – which will be pulled snug.

Choose a FabricHere is where you can go crazy. Following the pattern for the type of fabric you'll need, you can choose anything within that fabric to make your bra of: do you want something bright, something that will blend, something with a pattern? It's your bra, and now, you can make exactly what you want it to be.

Cut and SewCut the pieces and sew them together as shown in the pattern. To make sure it fits well before it's completely sewn together, take the cup and hold it up to yourself. It should cover the full bottom portion of your breast and have a little extra on the sides (for the seams), but there should not be any extra fabric along the actual bust. It's important to check both sides, as most people aren't symmetrical. The great part about making it yourself is: if it doesn't fit, you can adjust the pieces.

Add the InsertsFor a bra to look and be the best possible, it should do several things: push breasts up and together and offer support. The best way to do this is with inserts. Inserts can be extra fabric or some type of padding. You might want to try more than one thing so you can decide which works the best and which is most comfortable.
