1
If you know of any family members or friends who are attending therapy, ask if they would recommend their therapist to you. You can also ask your medical doctor or school counselor for some recommendations. Ask someone that you trust and whose opinion you value.
-
2
Call the recommended therapist and ask questions. Ask each therapist that you talk to what her credentials are. Where did she receive her training? Is she credentialed? Ask her what her approach to counseling is and have her explain to you what this means. Ask about office policies such as rescheduling sessions or fees for cancelled sessions. Be sure to ask what insurance providers are accepted.

3
Ask the therapist about his experience. Experience is a key factor in being an effective therapist. Also ask how much experience he has in treating people with the same presenting problem that you have.
-
4
When calling the therapist, think of yourself as an employer who is doing a phone interview. If a therapist does not want to take the time to answer your questions, it is a sign that this person is not the therapist for you.
