Wireless communications are all the rage. Unfortunately, getting a signal is not as easy as plugging in near a hotspot. Wi-fi antennas are expensive. However, there is another option. Follow these instructions to build a wi-fi antenna of your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metal can 4 inches diameter, 5.5 inches tall
  • Coaxial cable
  • Connector, type N
  • Needle nosed pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Razor blade
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Small file
  • Marker
  • Radiating element
  • Spray Paint (optional)
  1. Step 1

Measure the outside of the can, about an inch down from the top. Mark this spot.

  2. Step 2

Start the hole with the smallest bit and gradually move up the sizes until you've drilled a hole using the 3/4 inch bit. This method will allow you to drill the hole without damaging the can.

  3. Step 3

Place the connector stem into the hole. It will have holes on the corners of the plate that will hold mounting screws. Mark these holes on the side of the can. Drill holes through the marks using a bit that is the same size as the connector's mounting screws.

  4. Step 4

Take the N-connector out of the hole. Fit the radiating element snuggly into the hole at the tip of the connector. Sand as needed to make the fit work. Place the entire piece into the connector hole on the outside of the can. Screw in the mounting screws.

  5. Step 5

Spray paint the outside of the can to weatherize it. Use rust-proof paint. Glue the can's plastic lid onto the opening. Do this only if you will use the antenna outside.

  6. Step 6

Attach the coaxial cable to the connector and plug into your computer's external wireless card. Now your homemade wi-fi antenna is ready for use. Move it around as needed to achieve the best signal strength.
