A dishwasher is not just a pair of helping hands, but a powerful machine that makes your life easier in the kitchen. While it’s true that a dishwasher will help cut costs of employing a maid to do the dishes, you can also save a lot more money on your utility bills by installing a new, energy-efficient dishwasher. Here’s how you can install one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ‘Energy star’ qualified dishwasher
  • Wrenches (assorted set)
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Level
  • Hose clamps
  • Dishwasher waterline kit
  1. Step 1

Visit a reputable domestic appliance store and select an ‘Energy star’ qualified dishwasher. Compare the energy efficiencies claimed by the different models on display and also seek the advice of technically qualified salespersons in the store.

  2. Step 2

Cut the water and power supply to your existing dishwasher. Detach the kick plate from old washing machine unit. Unplug all other appliances and fixtures and isolate them from the installation area of your new dishwasher.

  3. Step 3

Remove the water line, power connection and drain line from your old dishwasher. Then, remove all screws that connect it to the counter. To help the dishwasher clear the counter for removal, turn the adjustable feet up.

  4. Step 4

Remove your new dishwasher from the box. Read installation instructions carefully. Connect the drain hose (provided) to your new dishwasher.

  5. Step 5

Measure the distance from the bottom side of the counter to the floor. Adjust the feet of your dishwasher, allowing one inch to make final adjustments using the level.

  6. Step 6

Connect the water and drain attachment. Slide the new machine into place and then make final adjustments to the feet, ensuring that the unit is perfectly level. Use a level to do this.

  7. Step 7

Install the cover plate at the base of your new dishwasher. Affix screws where necessary.

  8. Step 8

Turn on the power and water supply and run an initial test to determine if installation of your new dishwasher has been done correctly.

  9. Step 9

If installation is successful, operate your new dishwasher with a full load. Add to your dishwasher’s energy efficiency by using the inbuilt ‘air-dry’ option. In case your new machine is not equipped with this feature, you can air-dry your dishes by keeping the door of your new dishwasher open after the dishes are clean.

  10. Step 10

Avoid using the inbuilt, ‘rinse-hold’ or ‘pre-rinsing’ feature of your dishwasher. Although latest models of dishwashers can clean dishes without the use of this feature, you can save money on the 3 to 7 gallons of hot water that are consumed by using this feature.

  11. Step 11

Reduce the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees, if it has an inbuilt ‘booster heater’ to enhance energy efficiency. This is because each cleaning cycle requires heated water and this is where your dishwasher consumes the most energy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fill your dishwasher in accordance with manufacturer’s advice to permit adequate and proper water circulation.
  • Avoid the need to re-wash a load by washing your dishes right the first time
  • Do not attempt to install your dishwasher before disconnecting water and power lines.
  • Do not attempt installation of your new dishwasher if you are unsure, or lack mechanical ability to do so. Consult a professional technician to assist you.
