1
Keep your toenails cut to the length of the edge of the toe and filed well. This makes it less likely that you damage your nails by catching them which can cause then to become bruised and discolored. Cutting your nails too short may make them prone to fungal infections which will discolor the nails white/yellow.

2
Make sure that your shoes fit well and do not put pressure on the toes and toenails. Again, this will cause the nails to bruise and become discolored blue or black. This is a very common problem with runners who buy sneakers that are too short.

3
Remove nail polish after a few days of wear. Prolonged periods of nail polish may stain the toenails yellow and increase the chance of a fungal infection. Always use a base coat to prevent the polish staining the nail.

4
Wear sandals around pools, gyms and public showers so that you are less likely to pick up a fungal infection. A fungal infection in the nail causes a yellow or white discoloration. A fungal infection in the toenail may spread to other toenails if not treated promptly. Make sure you manage any excessive foot sweating or tinea as this will make you more prone to a fungal infection in your toenails.

5
Seek medical attention if you notice any discoloration in your toenails. Early intervention is the key to treating a fungal infection and many other problems.
