How to Make a Disco Ball with Old CDs
If you are decorating for a theme party or simply enjoy decorations and motifs from bygone eras, this craft project is designed with you in mind. It offers you a great design to re-create the dazzling allure of 1970s disco fever using little more than old CDs.
Things You'll Need
- Medium-size saucepan
- 5 cups of water
- CDs (old, scratched or useless)
- Safety goggles
- Kitchen tongs
- Strong kitchen shears
- Craft wire or string
- Styrofoam ball
- Glue gun
Instructions

1
Pour the water into the pan and set it on the stove over high heat. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Place a CD into the water.
-
2
Keep a very close eye on the CD, making sure it does not touch the bottom or begin to warp. For the first minute or two, depending on the temperature, the CD will float midway between the surface of the boiling water and the bottom of the pot.

3
Use your tongs to remove the CD from the water. Put on your safety goggles. While the disc is still hot, use the kitchen shears to cut it into irregularly shaped pieces. The CD may cool quickly, so be prepared to put it back into the hot water to soften it up again. Determine the size of your CD pieces by using the approximate measurements below as a guide.5" ball--6 or 7 CDs cut into dime-sized pieces12" ball--20 CDs cut into quarter- or half-dollar-sized pieces2' ball--50-70 CDs cut into half-dollar-sized pieces

4
Tie a string around the middle of the Styrofoam ball a single time to secure it, then tie a loop (which you will use to hang your disco ball).
-
5
Glue the pieces of CD onto the surface of the Styrofoam ball in a mosaic pattern. Begin at the bottom of the Styrofoam ball, working your way upward. This will ensure the best coverage, with the fewest gaps at the bottom
-
6
Let the glue dry and then tie a length of string to the loop at the top. Hang your new disco ball.
