If you are a step aerobics pro, you are ready for this variation on an over the top step. The following steps describe how to perform a scissor variation of the traditional over the top in step aerobics. You must be familiar with the over the top movement before moving on to the scissor variation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A step (bench and risers)
  • Cross training/running/shoes
  1. Step 1

Begin standing on the home side of your step. For sake of direction, we will call this facing north.

  2. Step 2

Step your entire right foot onto the bench so that your right foot faces west.

  3. Step 3

Using a hopping motion to move your entire left leg over the top of the bench, hop with your left foot and swing it behind your still planted right foot on the bench. You will land in one swoop on the opposite side of your bench. Right now, your right foot is still in the same position, firmly planted on the top of your bench, and your left foot and leg have swung like a scissor behind your planted right leg and your left foot is now planted on the away side of the bench.

  4. Step 4

Note, this action required momentum to successfully maneuver, especially if you have more than one riser under each side of your bench.

  5. Step 5

Now that your left foot has scissored over to the away side, step your right foot down. Both feet are planted on the ground on the away side of your bench.

  6. Step 6

Now, pick up the momentum and pace. Over the top is one of the most high impact moves in step aerobics.

  7. Step 7

On the away side, practice scissoring over to home with the opposite foot. Step your left foot firmly onto the bench, scissor your right foot behind all the way until it's planted firmly onto home side, then step down with your left.

Tips & Warnings
  • These steps describe scissor over the top with a right food lead.
  • The term scissor refers to the swinging motion your moving foot makes as it goes over the top of the bench.
  • Wear the right shoes and never do any movement that you are not comfortable with or that may cause injury.
