To become a police officer in Michigan, you must apply, pass the mental and physical exams as well as the lie detector test, background check and the drug test. You need to have a clean criminal background with no traffic infractions. The age for Michigan is 21 years of age to apply. The age requirement gives the candidate time to take the criminal justice courses at a college nearby. It is a rewarding job, but the pay is low for putting your life on the line every day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Criminal justice course
  • Clean background
  • Physical and mental stability
  • Police academy training
Step1
Finish and pass a criminal justice course. The classes in criminal justice teach you everything you need to know about the justice system, which is what you need before applying for a police officer job. Any additional classes are a plus when applying for a law enforcement job.
Step2
Apply for a job with a Michigan Police Department. You will need a current photo ID and they will take you fingerprints. The application is lengthy and it is best to take two so you can make one a sample and one to be submitted. How you fill out the application will mean a difference between receiving an interview and not.
Step3
Schedule the written examination. Ask for a study guide, so you can read and learn about police work with the Michigan Police Department. The test will cover such areas as comprehension, reading, writing, memorization and deductive reason.
Step4
Prepare yourself for the physical and mental exams. These tests are vigorous and test your abilities and your mental stability.
Step5
Schedule the drug test and the lie detector test. Then prepare for the interview. Once you have passed all the tests and a background check, you could be offered a job. This all depends on how you present yourself at the interview. Dress causal, but presentable. Talk positive and do not produce long, dragged out answers.
Step6
Hired candidates will be asked to join the police academy. This is where the individual makes it or does not. The routines and training are intense and does take a toll on ones body.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although this profession is rewarding, it can be stressful.
  • Choose a small community to begin your career.
  • Advancement in different divisions has great potential.
  • Police officers do live with danger every day.
