Step 1
Choose an appropriate user name for the Forum you are joining. For instance, don't pick a Republican supportive user ID on a Democratic discussion board, or a pro-life name for a pro-choice forum, otherwise you will be marking yourself as a potential trouble maker from the start.
-
Step 2
Read the FAQ if it has one, and familiarize yourself with any posting guidelines. What kind of language is permitted? Are there any subjects which are taboo? What is the age range of the board - is it strictly adults only or might there be children reading? Who are the moderators?
-
Step 3
Familiarize yourself with the layout and organization of the forum. Is it one big discussion board, or are there different boards for specific subjects? Are there "sticky" posts (frequently visited threads which remain at the top of the board for visibility and to avoid repetition of the same subjects)?
-
Step 4
If you have joined to ask a specific question, search - and search HARD - before you post to make sure the question hasn't been asked before. Make sure you are asking your question in the appropriate area if there are different subject boards and threads.
-
Step 5
It is good to read through old posts before joining in but don't revive old threads, especially if they appear to have been controversial.
-
Step 6
If you are joining a social discussion forum and don't really know where to jump in, start by joining in with neutral, personal preference type threads - what's your favorite food, how's the weather where you are, what's the price of gas in your neighborhood. These give people a chance to get to see you around a bit and greet you so by the time you're ready to get involved with meatier threads you've already established a rapport with other members.
-
Step 7
Don't be afraid to get involved with subjects you're particularly familiar with. Keep posts succinct and informative but try not to come across as a know-all!
