How to Draw Heads
Whether you want to draw a lifelike representation or a cartoon character, knowing how to draw a human head will help your artwork enormously. The head is often the first thing that somebody looks at when observing art. The face and head can define a character. It's something you must learn. Nothing will help your drawing as much as studious practice. Keep at it, and soon you'll be very comfortable drawing heads.

Start by drawing an oval in the center of your paper.

Draw a horizontal line through the center of the oval and a vertical down the middle.

Draw the eyes at the horizontal line, making sure they are not too close to the vertical line. Draw the eyebrows as well.

Next, draw the ears. Make sure the tops of the ears align with the horizontal line (the same line the eyes are on). There are many variations of ear shapes.

Check out pictures in magazines for different shapes and practice them. You want to be good at drawing ears before you can properly draw a head.

Draw the nose next. As with ears, there are many variations of nose shapes. Use shading to create depth.

Next, draw the mouth. Make sure to leave adequate space for the chin below the mouth. Also, be sure and shade the skin above the upper lip.

Draw the hair line and hair. The hair line is generally lower than you initially consider.

Draw the neck and shoulders. Men's necks are generally much thicker than women's necks. Shade for throat contours.

Erase guide lines.

Tips & Warnings
The horizontal and vertical lines will be easier to erase at the end if they were drawn lightly.
Don't rush through this. Truly learn how to do it right through trial and error.
