How to Build a Laptop from Scratch

  1. Step 1

There are a number of online companies that offer bare bone laptops for sale. After choosing a model, a select line of hardware and software for that model will be available to choose from. Puget Systems offers a wide array of different options to choose from; there are many similar companies.

  2. Step 2

Choose a laptop shell. The laptops will be organized and listed by weight, display, and measurements. Gamers are encouraged to choose models with large screens, while travelers are better off with smaller, lighter models.

  3. Step 3

Once a laptop has been chosen, the list of available hardware options will be given on the customization page of the website. Scroll through the various options on the customization page and choose the ideal hardware for your needs. Higher memory, faster CPU, and larger power packs are the best options for gamers. Average users should concentrate on USB ports, battery life, and portability.

  4. Step 4

Decide on the necessary software for the machine. Gamers won't need office suites but students will, and travelers usually need a bit of everything. There are options for both free and commercial software; for example, OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office are both offered. Be sure to note the price of each application.

  5. Step 5

Choose any accessories needed. This includes USB hubs, carrying cases, external drives, screen protectors, and other computing essentials. These will be shipped with the laptop computer, and the price will be added to the total laptop cost.

  6. Step 6

Once the laptop is fully designed and customized, you will be prompted to enter your billing information and shipping address. Shipping insurance is an option, and will protect you from loss or damage. You will also need to choose a shipping method. The available methods will depend on the company.

Tips & Warnings
  • Small screens don't necessarily mean smaller resolutions. Be sure to check both.
  • Most laptops are converting to widescreen format.
  • Don't choose a heavy model if you're planning on carrying it anywhere.
  • 1.6GHz is a good CPU speed for any non-gamers.
  • Accessories can often times be purchased cheaper from online sites.
  • In addition to the quoted laptop and accessory prices, there is will be shipping, handling, and insurance charges as well.
