A summertime travel activity book for kids can help make any road trip more tolerable. Whether your family is traveling an hour to the beach, or taking an extended road vacation, kids needs an activity to do in the car that does not need batteries. The summertime travel activity book for kids can be made age-appropriate by using coloring pages or word puzzles.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • One clipboard
  • Plastic bag with a zipper closure
  • Colorful selection of eight or more crayons
  • Printed coloring pages
Step1
Take a quick survey with the kids in the family to find out which characters and subjects they currently like. The answers may be based on popular movies or games or TV shows. Write down their answers. This will help you create a general theme for each child's summertime travel activity book.
Step2
Research the subjects online and find free coloring pages, word puzzles and printable word games for each child. Include a variety of images, some which are easy to color and others which are more challenging.
Step3
Print out a copy of a map in the state you will be traveling. Include the map in the summertime travel activity book for kids. Keep a copy of the map for yourself, and have the kids trace your route along on their paper as you drive it.
Step4
Draw out images of Tic Tac Toe games, Hangman and other paper-based games that more than one child can play. Also add a blank drawing of a license plate and let the kids fill in the license plate with their own letters and drawings. For a long road trip, include a sheet in the summertime travel activity book where kids can write down each new state license plate they see from.
Step5
Collect new crayons or colored pencils and include them in a plastic bag which zips closed. Attach all of the printable coloring sheets, puzzles and maps to the clipboard. Place the plastic bag on the top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Include some of the same pages and activities when you have more than one child.
  • Update the summertime activity book with something different on each road trip.
  • Make your own coloring pages if you cannot find them online.
  • Do not give crayons or drawing utensils to toddlers who like to mouth things.
  • Do not give kids images to color that they outgrew two years ago.
